Minister of Justice Introduces Legislation to Establish an Independent Canadian Criminal Case Review Commission
INDEPENDENT BOARD OF REVIEW (working group) PRESS RELEASE - February 16, 2023
Minister of Justice Introduces Legislation to Establish an Independent Canadian Criminal Case Review Commission
The late David Milgaard’s Independent Review Board (Working Group) is grateful that Justice Minister David Lametti today introduced a new bill to establish an Independent Canadian Case Review Commission. The bill is named after Joyce and David Milgaard.
This is a great honour to the memory of both Joyce and David Milgaard who strongly advocated on behalf of the wrongly convicted for the formation of a review group independent of the criminal justice system. This is an important step towards that goal coming to fruition.
We are grateful to the other organizations and individuals who worked tirelessly toward this common goal.
Our only regret is that Joyce and David are not with us on this important day, however their spirit can be felt all around us.
We look forward to the bill being passed and a functioning independent commission being formed.
Win Wahrer, co-founder of Innocence Canada stated:
“This is the first step in fulfilling the hopes and prayers of wrongly convicted individuals languishing in prisons all across this country. May their journey to freedom and exoneration be realized through the help and assistance of this vitally important independent commission.”
