The Bata Shoe Museum and Innocence Canada for an honest, and impactful look at wrongful convictions in Canada. This panel talk will look at wrongful convictions through the experiences of those who have lived through it, and those who have made a significant impact through their efforts to help clear the names of the victims of wrongful incarceration.

10th Anniversary of International Wrongful Conviction Day Gala
Don’t miss the opportunity to recognize, acknowledge and honour the wrongly convicted, their families, advocates, and supporters at this special milestone year event!
The evening will commence at 5:00 pm with a reception followed by an evening programme (7pm - 9pm) that involves the introduction of the exonerees and their families, unveiling of artwork, the presentation of the Rubin Hurricane Carter Champion of Justice, the Tracey Tyler, and Donald Marshall Junior Awards, musical performances and much more!
Amongst the exonerees attending from across Canada are co-president, Ron Dalton, A.J. Woodhouse, Brian Anderson, Tammy Marquardt Wynne, Maria Shepherd and co-founder and lawyer James Lockyer, Board members, Foundation members, sponsors and other luminaries and special guests.
This event is hosted by Innocence Canada and the International Wrongful Conviction Day Committe. It is possible for us to host this event free of charge due to our generous sponsors.

Tracie Brown is a former Houston police officer. When she observed a white female police officer choke and beat a black female, she was the only officer willing to testify against the police department. She was threatened by the District Attorney’s office and City Attorney, and was falsely accused and wrongly convicted of a theft and attempted theft.

Wrongful Conviction Virtual Event Series: Christopher Scott
In 1997, Christopher Scott was wrongfully convicted of capital murder as a result of faulty eyewitness identification. Scott was exonerated in 2009, based on another man’s detailed confession - the first non-DNA case. After his release, Scott founded the House of Renewed Hope, a non-profit organization whose goal is to investigate individuals claiming actual innocence.

Maria was wrongly convicted of causing the death of her step-daughter, Kasandra. The linchpin of Maria’s case was the flawed evidence of Dr. Charles Smith. Maria is now a licensed paralegal, board member at Innocence Canada, and tireless advocated for the wrongly convicted, taking on international cases.
Wrongful Conviction Virtual Event Series: Anna Vasquez
Anna Vasquez is the Director of Outreach and Education for the Innocence Project of Texas. Ms. Vasquez took on that role after serving nearly 13 years for a crime that never occurred. Ms. Vasquez and three of her friends (the San Antonio Four) were convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in a 1994 case, when Ms. Vasquez was 19.

Evening with former Toronto Star reporter Harold Levy
On October 25th, spend an evening with Harold Levy who as a Toronto Star reporter covered many wrongful conviction cases including cases that involved the now discredited pediatric forensic pathologist Charles Smith. October 1, 2022 was the 14th anniversary of the Goudge Report, a topic that will be explored and discussed. It will be an interesting and informative evening that you don’t want to miss!

When you enter from Humber College Blvd, go to the Humber College North Campus Parking Garage. At the front doors, someone will be there to guide you to the room where the event is taking place.
