On July 16th 2021, The Washington Post reported Illinois became the first state to ban police from lying to minors in interrogations. In recognizing the need to change laws that have “failed the people they serve”, practices such as false promising, leniency, and claiming false existence of evidence will be prohibited as of January 1st. The article comments on how the United State’s historical tradition of tactics used to ‘trick’ people into confessing stops now, after decades of evidence supports their connection with false confessions, and thereafter, wrongful convictions. Illinois is the first state to introduce such a bill, and while it is the first step, there are hopes other states will follow suit, and the review of the criminal justice system will continue.
